The Mother Abides is the title given to our new publication, a collection of writings and talks by Nolini Kanta Gupta from the final decade of his life. They begin from the time of the Mother’s passing in November 1973 and their subject is often framed around an understanding of the Mother’s work on earth and how that work continues after her departure. As Nolini-da was a senior member of the Ashram and a respected exponent of Sri Aurobindo’s Integral Yoga, these final reflections served as a kind of guidance to the community. Often first addressed to the students in his classes, these pieces focus on the future – of the Ashram, of India, and of the world – and the words both admonish and encourage. In a previously unpublished piece from January 1982 titled “What Is to Be Done?” we find the following:
In the outer world, especially in Europe and America where the modern life and consciousness are centred in the intellect, where intellectual light is the only light, the unrivalled master of life, well, let them discuss and speculate; they will acquire at least some mental knowledge, a bit of purification and clarity of intellect.

But for those who aspire not only to educate and polish their mind but also to heighten and transform their consciousness, for them today is needed a Tapasya, a concentration, an intense concentration of all their force and will on that one aspiration, on that one arduous effort. For them the only thing to do is self-purification—purification of the body, purification of the vital, the reorientation and reorganisation of the entire lower base of consciousness, its physical and especially its lower vital parts. Those who want spirituality in practical life must go down to the bottom and accomplish this purification.

And the future? The future of what? The future of the individual soul is in Mother’s arms. And the future of the creation is a new divine dawn; it is ready, absolutely ready for manifesting in the material; it is waiting, its advent is inevitable, no force can bar it. It is waiting in the subtle physical for the clearance of the earth stage. The age-long dream of the eternal dawn of which the ancients sang will be realised:

Oh, the Supreme Light of lights is come.
Rig Veda 1.113.1
But will there be any man to sing the invocation at that moment? Let us hope so. Nothing is impossible.

The other publications introduced in this issue are three monographs by Kireet Joshi. In Sri Aurobindo’s Philosophy of Evolution, the author outlines the basic concepts of Sri Aurobindo’s view of the evolution of consciousness. Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother presents an overview of the yogic process which calls for a radical change of consciousness leading to an enlightened, transformed gnostic society. In The Veda in the Light of Sri Aurobindo, the author introduces Sri Aurobindo’s insights into the profound truths hidden behind the imagery and language of the Veda.

In Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy, evolution is the process of a gradual development of consciousness. Life, already involved as a principle of consciousness in Matter, evolved into its higher state of manifestation. Mind, already involved in Life, grew manifest in man and continues to develop its powers and capabilities. The next evolutionary step is the emergence of the supramental consciousness, which will have the power to transform all aspects of the being and the creation to express the highest plane of truth. This booklet lays out the basics of this view of evolution and, in the process, addresses some fundamental questions about the keynote of terrestrial existence.
