OUR FIRST new publication in this issue is a compilation edited by A. S. Dalal titled Morality, Idealism, Religion and Yoga. In his introduction, Dalal lays out the aim of the book, which is to distinguish spirituality, or yoga in its widest sense, from morality, idealism, and religion—other higher pursuits of life with which it is often confused. Morality involves regulating one’s physical and vital desires and impulses by the power of the mental will. Service to others – family, society, country – and other forms of idealism, while helping to discipline and mould human nature, still belong to the mental evolution and are bound by the ego. Exoteric religion serves a purpose in the life of societies to correct collective egoism and provide a support and help to those who have some spiritual devotion. But there is a radical difference between these three approaches to higher life and that of spirituality. Spirituality and yoga depend essentially on a change of consciousness; they reveal to man another realm entirely, beyond the rule of the ego, where one can begin to live more freely and unite with one’s true self.

As a first-hand account of life in the Ashram spanning five decades, Pramila Devi’s book of reminiscences, The Luminous Past, offers an intimate and instructive perspective on the sadhaks’ relations with Sri Aurobindo and the Mother and with each other. These interactions were often full of humour and affection. The book reflects the humility of a life lived simply, in the Mother’s service. Pramila-di recalls how Nolini-da offered her the following advice when she first took up the work of caring for the children at Jhunjhun Home:

They [the children] must live in joy. One cannot force them to study and learn.… We have to see to it that they follow the path of simplicity and openness. They will all be worshippers of Truth. When they receive love, children become confident and they grow up to be truthful. Many students will come. Some will stay here and some will go away. But everyone will be touched by the Mother’s and Sri Aurobindo’s light, that light which will show them the way to the Truth. They are the ones who will in future show the path to others.

Earth, Love and Doom is a treatise on myth and symbolism in Sri Aurobindo’s epic poem Savitri. In an early chapter titled "Savitri—A Mythicised Romance with Symbolic Overtones", the author explains the premises for his detailed studies in later chapters. He also says that "myth reveals the internal qualities of man to fight with falsehood" and goes on to explore the symbolic dimensions of the legend in the light of Sri Aurobindo’s own comment that the characters in Savitri are "incarnations or emanations of living and Conscious Forces with whom we can enter into concrete touch and they take human bodies in order to help man and show him the way from his mortal state to a divine consciousness and immortal life."

The most recent publication by Huta Hindocha is The Joy of Light, a series of forty-seven plates of crayon sketches on tinted paper inspired by visions the Mother had recounted to her. After seeing each sketch, the Mother concentrated a few moments and then wrote down the inner significance, such as “Concentrated Serenity”, “Perfect Surrender and Adoration”, and “Blissful Peace”. These significances, in facsimiles of the Mother’s handwriting, are included with the drawings.

The Meaning of Spirituality
— Selections from the Works of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother
ISBN: 979-81-7058-037-8
Publisher: Sri Aurobindo Ashram Publication Department, Pondicherry
Binding: Soft Cover
Pages: 174
Price: Rs 80

Spirituality may often be confused with morality, idealism, and religion, which play significant roles in regulating, controlling, and directing the lives of most men. But spirituality, or yoga in its more general sense, is essentially different because it proceeds directly by a change of consciousness and presents a radical new approach to life. This approach, which goes beyond the ego and its exclusive focus on the common habits of the mind, life, and body, reveals to man how to find his true self and seek union with the Divine. The editor has selected passages from the works of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother that define and clarify these fundamental differences and, in the final section, that describe how to prepare for and take up the path of yoga.

— Pramila Devi
ISBN: 978-0-9562923-3-9
Publisher: First Feature Ltd., London, UK
Binding: Soft Cover

The anecdotes collected in this book, a translation of the original Bengali, span five decades, from the early 1940s to the late 1980s. Pramila Devi joined the Ashram as a young woman in 1941. She learned French, worked in the bakery and the laundry and also taught at the school. Such sadhaks as Nolini, André, Amrita, Pavitra, Pranab, Janina, her cousin Jatin, and especially Bharati often figure in her recollections of these years. In 1962, the Mother asked her to look after the Jhunjhun boarding for students, a work she continued until her passing in 1995. This translation first appeared in serial form in Mother India between 2011 and 2013.

Mythico-Symbolic Dimensions of Sri Aurobindo’s Savitri
— Nanda Kishore Mishra
ISBN: 978-81-7273-383-4
Publisher: Authorspress, Delhi
Binding: Hard Cover
Pages: 235
Price: Rs 550

This scholarly study begins with an overview of Sri Aurobindo’s life and his philosophic and spiritual thought. The next chapter discusses Sri Aurobindo’s poetics, in which vision is the characteristic power of a poet. Subsequent chapters deal with symbolism in his poetry, a comparative study of myth and symbol in world literature and in the context of Savitri, Aswapathy’s spiritual odyssey of the soul, and a look at the major symbols of fire, the sun, the dawn, light, and night in Savitri, with reference to the Vedas and Upanishads. The final chapters study symbolism in Savitri and the Divine Comedy, and the use of myth as an instrument of higher knowledge and vision in modern literature.

ISBN: 978-81-87372-26-4
Publisher: The Havyavahana Trust, Pondicherry
Binding: Soft Cover
Pages: 83
Price: Rs 350

The forty-seven crayon sketches on tinted papers collected in this volume were done by Huta and were inspired by visions which the Mother had recounted to her. Every day over a period of about six months, Huta would do at least one picture. After being shown each drawing, the Mother would concentrate and then note down the significance of the sketch, such as “Unshaken Hope”, “Grateful Receptivity”, and “The Birth of a Consciousness”. These significances, in facsimiles of the Mother’s handwriting, are given with the drawings. The book also includes a few sketches done by the Mother as well as her comments on several of Huta’s drawings.

Price: Rs 250

Management by consciousness is an alternative approach by which managers and leaders can enhance efficiency and productivity by shifting the emphasis away from the purely external organisation of a business to the inner development of the powers, potentials, and faculties of the human consciousness. It highlights the concept that work is primarily the field for an integral progress, an inner growth, and not merely the means of the production and distribution of goods and services. This anthology includes relevant passages from the works of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother as well as articles by reputed authors. Originally published in 1994, this revised and enlarged edition has an expanded list of contributors, and incorporates new research and relevant studies on the consciousness approach to management.

ISBN: 978-81-7058-981-5

Binding: Soft Cover

Translated from the original French, the 313 prayers and meditations in this book are a record of the Mother’s early spiritual life, written, in her own words, “during years of intensive yogic discipline”. Most of the diary entries she selected for publication were from the period between 1912 and 1917. In an introductory note she says she intended them to serve as a spiritual guide for seekers aspiring to consecrate themselves to self-mastery and a complete surrender to and union with the Divine. Several of the translations were done by Sri Aurobindo and some others by disciples were revised by him.

Bengali translation of Autobiographical Notes and Other Writings of Historical Interest

Description of content for original work:
This book consists of notes, letters, telegrams, and public statements written by Sri Aurobindo at various times. It includes approximately three hundred pages of material not included in the SABCL edition: well over a hundred pages are published here for the first time and the rest were previously published only in journals or as parts of different books. Of the material already published in the SABCL edition and included in this new book, half is from the now-discontinued volume Sri Aurobindo On Himself and the other half from Letters on Yoga and the Supplement volume, which was never brought out as an independent book. Most of the rest of the letters from On Himself, written by Sri Aurobindo after 1927 and touching on the subject of himself and his sadhana, will be included in a new volume entitled Letters on Himself and the Ashram.

This documentary volume is divided into four parts: autobiographical notes, which consist primarily of things he wrote to correct statements made by others about him; letters of historical interest, mostly written before 1927 to family members, political and professional associates, people interested in his yogic practice, and public figures; public statements on Indian and world events; and public notices concerning his ashram and yoga. It contains a detailed table of contents and nearly sixty pages of editorial notes, containing information on the people and historical events referred to in the texts.
