The three recent publications in English introduced here highlight three aspects of Sri Aurobindo’s life and work. In Letters on Poetry and Art, the soft cover edition of Volume 27 of The Complete Works of Sri Aurobindo, there are nearly one thousand letters from Sri Aurobindo to his disciples that reveal his insight on the process of poetic creation, from his understanding of the higher planes of inspiration to his mastery of poetic technique, style, and diction. He weighs in on such subjects as literary criticism, guidance to aspiring writers, great poets of the world, his own poetry and poetic technique, and the role of the arts in the practice of his Integral Yoga. For a detailed examination of the book’s contents see the lead article in the most recent SABDA print newsletter at this link.
As a philosopher of evolutionary thought Sri Aurobindo left his own indelible mark. Sri Aurobindo and European Philosophy is a concise appraisal of how Sri Aurobindo’s thought, based on his inner experiences and spiritual realisations, reflects a deeper understanding and a broader vision of some of the basic ideas expounded in European philosophy. The author begins his comparative study with the three ancient philosophers who so greatly influenced modern European philosophy: Heraclitus, Plato, whose theory of ideas is his most well-known contribution to European philosophy, and Plotinus, the founder of Neo-Platonism, who Sri Aurobindo said “was not a mere philosopher,—his philosophy was founded on yogic experience and realisation”. Sri Aurobindo wrote a forty-page essay on Heraclitus, describing him as a synthetic thinker who reconciled opposites in an integral vision, especially the qualitative states of Being and Becoming.
The book continues chronologically with chapters on the German philosophers Schelling (natural philosophy), Hegel (absolute idealism), and Nietzsche (the ideal of superman). These are followed by the French philosophers Bergson (intuition in the philosophy of life) and Teilhard de Chardin (the Omega Point). The concluding chapters deal with Gebser, who did research in the field of consciousness, and the evolutionary thinker Whitehead and his process philosophy. Through each chapter the author follows the thread of Sri Aurobindo’s thought, pointing out influences, confluences, variations, and new contributions.
Sri Aurobindo: A Postcolonial Reader is a compilation of selected texts by Sri Aurobindo arranged in five categories: his writings on the Veda, the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, Indian culture, and the beginnings of a linguistic study. In her introduction, the editor posits the thesis that Sri Aurobindo was ahead of his time in his analysis of the West’s colonial reading of India’s ancient culture. His deep study of the Vedas led him to comment on the centrality of these scriptures and his study of the words and phrases used convinced him that they conveyed meanings at multiple levels. He commented that Western scholars had tied themselves to the lowest possible sense and meaning of the scriptures when in reality “the Rishis arranged the substance of their thought in a system of parallelism by which the same deities were at once internal and external powers of universal Nature, and they managed its expression through a system of double values by which the same language served for their worship in both aspects.” The editor contends that Sri Aurobindo’s assertion that the Veda, instead of being a record of the infancy of a culture, marks the high point of an ancient civilisation in its full maturity is of historical significance in the growth of postcolonial discourse and analysis in India.
