Heading off the list of new publications since our last issue are three compilations from the works of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother: a new, illustrated version of Ideal Child, Divine Possibility, brief selections on Sri Aurobindo’s vision of life and his method of spiritual practice, and Auroville (The City the Earth Needs), a reprint from an All India Magazine issue.

The first volume of the revised and enlarged edition of the Collected Works of Nolini Kanta Gupta has been published by the Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education. Titled The Human Quest: Essays on Modern Life, it contains all the material of the 1970 edition as well as additional writings discovered later. The essays in this volume address the need for a radically new approach towards the problems of modern life, creating the possibility to build a new kind of society, one of unity and harmony.

Philosophy and yoga are well represented in such titles as The Veda Made Simple, a study of the complex philosophy and symbolism of the Rig Veda based on Sri Aurobindo’s interpretation and This is Sanatan Dharma, a series of reflective notes on Sanātana Dharma from the vedantic perspective. In Sri Aurobindo and Philosophy, the author writes on Sri Aurobindo’s role of darshanik vis-à-vis both Indian and Western philosophy, linguistic and literary philosophy, and the philosophies of psychology, religion, history, and political thought. And we have two volumes of Discourses on The Synthesis of Yoga—Volume V: Part II: The Yoga of Integral Knowledge (Chapters 1–5) and Volume IX: Part Three: The Yoga of Divine Love (Chapters 1–8).

The last two English books introduced below are new volumes in two popular series. Talks by Nirodbaran (April 1971–September 1971), in which Nirodbaran continues to share his reminiscences, quoting from his correspondence with Sri Aurobindo on such subjects as being a doctor in the Ashram, writing poetry under Sri Aurobindo’s tutelage, and questions and answers on the practice of the Integral Yoga. How They Came to Sri Aurobindo and the Mother: Volume 5 presents thirty-seven accounts of how sadhaks and devotees began their spiritual journeys toward their gurus.

The Veda Made Simple
— Pariksith Singh
ISBN: 978-93-92209-51-2
Publisher: BluOne Ink LLP, Noida
Binding: Soft Cover
Pages: 191
Price: Rs 699

As a keen student of the Veda for more than thirty years while also deeply engaged with Sri Aurobindo’s writings, the author has attempted in this book to understand what the Veda is and how Sri Aurobindo brought it back to us in a modern, lucid language. Chapter titles indicate the scope and intent of the study: a brief history and context of the Veda, a skeleton key to the Veda, the unique non-dualism of the Veda, and Yajna and the Fourfold Godhead of the Veda. Five appendices enhance the reader’s study of this interpretation of the complex philosophy and symbolism of the Rig Veda.

The Quest for Truth
— Partho
ISBN: 978-93-92209-50-5
Publisher: BluOne Ink LLP, Noida
Binding: Soft Cover
Pages: 312
Price: Rs 699

A series of reflective notes on Sanatan Dharma from the vedantic perspective, this book highlights some of the foundational concepts of Sanatan Dharma. The author admits that the scope of the book is limited to the mystical and the yogic elements in Sanatan Dharma and touches only briefly on some of its cultural and historical aspects. Emphasising the importance of its philosophical underpinning, its world view, and how that continuously shapes the civilisation that it engenders and upholds, he argues that Sri Aurobindo embodied the high truth of the Sanatan Dharma and established it as the true framework for a pan-Indian nationalism based on a spiritual consciousness.

Sri Aurobindo and Philosophy
— Pariksith Singh
ISBN: 978-93-92209-01-7
Publisher: BluOne Ink LLP, Noida
Binding: Hard Cover
Pages: 410
Price: Rs 995

In the first few short essays that introduce this book, the author sets out to describe Sri Aurobindo as a darshanik, one who does not speculate and intellectualise, but who directly realises or spiritually and intuitively perceives the truth of existence. Sri Aurobindo expanded this traditional role to include Western thought and truths in a universal synthesis. In a series of very personal mini essays, he writes on Sri Aurobindo’s role of darshanik vis-à-vis Indian philosophy, Western philosophy, linguistic and literary philosophy, and the philosophies of psychology, religion, history, and what he terms the political thought for humanity’s future.

Singh calls Sri Aurobindo a philosopher in action, who not only spoke the truth for his times but for the next few hundred years, calling men to awaken to their highest possibilities and showing the way it was to be done.

Publisher: Sri Aurobindo Centre for Advanced Research Trust, Pondicherry

Continuing the author’s series of books transcribed from his talks on The Synthesis of Yoga, Dr Reddy commences his commentary with the first five chapters of Part Two: The Yoga of Integral Knowledge. In these chapters the author examines Sri Aurobindo’s definitions of the object of knowledge, both spiritual and temporal, and the status of knowledge, first the ordinary function of knowledge and secondly the true knowledge that comes with an inner realisation, with the experience of identity with the Divine. Further chapters emphasise the purification of all parts of the being as a requisite for attaining an accurate and clear mental knowledge, as is the power of concentration and a right understanding of the inner renunciation of all attachment, desire, and self-will that divides the human being from a life unified with the divine consciousness.

Publisher: Sri Aurobindo Centre for Advanced Research Trust, Pondicherry
Binding: Soft Cover
Pages: 361
Price: Rs 425

Volume Nine of this series commences with Part Three of The Synthesis of Yoga: “The Yoga of Divine Love”. Love as “the crown of works and the flowering of knowledge” forms the basis of the first chapter. Discourses then follow on love as the essential motive and the fulfilment of the Integral Yoga and on the need to turn Godward all parts of the human being to establish contact, enter into a relation, and unite with the Divine. “The Way of Devotion” is to consecrate the entire being, to bring an intensity to one’s yoga that culminates in the complete and utter surrender to the Beloved. The power and intimacy of the divine personality set against an intellectual principle of a divine consciousness is the seeker’s dilemma addressed in Chapter Five. The last three chapters discuss the experience of Ananda on the path of Yoga and explore the very nature of love and its profound place at the centre of our relation with the Divine.
